ARTD 105A-E Studies in Northwest Native Art

For each credit students research and write a paper exploring some aspect of Pacific Northwest Coastal Indian art.  Topics may include history and cultural significance, styles of representation, interpretation, artifacts, and artistic practices. (HT)

  1. Identify Northwest Coastal art forms.
  2. To apply formline design to art created by the student
  3. To understand the importance of the historical use of formline design and the impact it has had on numerous Tribes from Alaska to Washington State.
  4. To appreciate the perpetuation of this art form in a land where, every man is a painter and sculptor (Holm, 5).
  5. Convey specific information about history, cultural significance, styles of representation, interpretation, artifacts, and artistic practices.
  6. Gain an appreciation and awareness of the importance and cultural significance of Northwest Coast Native art.
