ENVS 265 GIS I: Introduction to GIScience
Provides an overview of the science, technology and applications of geographic information principles and concepts. It introduces the use of Geography, Cartography, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Remote Sensing and other visual disciplines as tools to acquire data then evaluate, plan, and manage tribal, cultural, and natural resources. (NSL)
Prerequisite
Prerequisites: CMPS 100 or CMPS 101, MATH 102 or 107.
Outcomes
- Acquire external data (archives, internet, tribal GIS departments, academia, government agencies) and integrate them into a GIS focusing on the student’s tribe/nation or chosen topic.
- Describe the basic properties and uses of coordinate systems and choose appropriate projections
- Identify, manage, and analyze digital data in raster and vector formats to address geospatial problems and/or research questions.
- Demonstrate organizational skills in file and database management.
- Perform data editing and queries.
- Produce maps that meet geographic and cartographic standards.
- Demonstrate ethical awareness in data sensitivity and data protection.
