READ 91 Academic Reading Strategies
Supports development of thinking and reading skills essential for learning college content. Supports development of awareness of and provides practice with structures and processes central to reading and writing. Addresses improving reading and contextual work with academic vocabulary.
Outcomes
- Differentiate important information from details, identify most of the main point, and differentiate facts from opinions.
- Summarize material accurately.
- Infer meanings of unknown words from contexts, roots, prefixes, and suffixes and find definitions, pronunciations, synonyms and antonyms using a dictionary and thesaurus.
- Establish and adjust purposes for reading (e.g., to understand, interpret, enjoy, solve problems, predict outcomes, answer a specific question, form an opinion, skim for facts, identify models for own writing) and adjust reading rate according to purpose for reading.
- Recognize organizational structure of different writing forms/genres and effectively use a variety of before, during, and after reading strategies to monitor comprehension.
- Follow logic of compound/complex sentence structures and use knowledge of punctuation to assist in comprehension.
