PSYC 220 Abnormal Psychology

Overview of multiple perspectives of psychological conditions commonly labeled by contemporary culture as abnormal, including antecedents, assessment, and therapeutic approaches. Prerequisites: ENGL-101 and PSYC-101. (SS)




  1. Identify, explain and apply the biopsychosocial perspective to assess abnormal behavior.
  2. Apply the criteria from the DSM-IV TR to the assessment and diagnosis of a mental disorder.
  3. Debate the ethical issues of definition, assessment and treatment of abnormal behavior.
  4. Apply research to the diagnosis, therapeutic approach and prognosis of a disorder.
  5. Compare and contrast indigenous assessment and healing with Western approaches.
